There are many types or styles of tyres that suit various needs, there is no one tyre that fits all unfortunately, but here is a guide to help you with your decision.

A performance tyre's tread is a much flatter design to improve grip/contact with the road and tend to have smaller sidewalls to enhance cornering.

Advantages

  • Extremely high dry weather grip, in terms of acceleration and cornering stability.

Disadvantages

  • Much higher wear than other tyres as there is more tread in contact with the road and typically a softer compound which also wears faster.

  • Reduced performance in wet weather as the grooves and sipes can't disperse water as efficient as other designs.

A summer tyre's tread is still a flatter design, although incorporates more grooves and sipes compared to the performance tyre to improve performance in the wet. This is the most typical, everyday tyre that more drivers are familiar with.

Advantages

  • High dry weather grip, in terms of acceleration and cornering stability.

  • Good wet weather traction.

  • Typically longer lasting than the performance tyres above.

Disadvantages

  • Sufficient, but not outstanding performance in wet conditions.

  • No real off-road capabilities at all.

An All Season Tyre's tread typically includes many sipes, grooves and channels to disperse water efficiently, and provides a safer ride in harsh weather, where temperatures are lower and the chance of aquaplaning is high.

Advantages

  • High dry weather grip, in terms of acceleration and cornering stability.

  • Good wet weather traction.

  • Typically longer lasting than the tread patterns above.

Disadvantages

  • Sufficient, but not outstanding performance in wet conditions.

  • No real off-road capabilities at all.

An All Terrain Tyre is described as 'the jack of all trades, master of none' type of tyre. This design is good off-road, good on-road, good in dry weather, good in wet weather, typically uses a harder compound in production therefore will last longer, but will only provide sufficient grip. Ultimately the tyre is a good all-rounder, but not amazing in any aspect.

Advantages

  • Good for wet weather conditions with enhanced water dispersion.

  • Has off-road capabilities, while still being good on-road.

Disadvantages

  • Does not excel in any area.

  • May be noisy from the more aggressive tread pattern compared to smaller passenger tyres.

An Off-Road Tyre is the most aggressive tread patterns on the market, these are designed purely for off-road, but can still be driven on-road (90% off-road, 10% on-road).

Advantages

  • Ultimate traction in mud, sand and rocky terrain.

Disadvantages

  • Will be extremely noisy on-road tyres.

  • Quickly wear if overused on tarmac.
