On a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle, you can typically fit three main types of tyres, each suited for different driving conditions and terrains.

Highway Terrain (H/T) Tyres

  • Best for: On-road driving, city commuting, and long-distance highway travel.
  • Characteristics: H/T tyres are designed primarily for paved surfaces, offering a smooth, quiet ride and good fuel efficiency. They have less aggressive tread patterns, which helps in reducing road noise and improving handling at high speeds.
  • Advantages: Excellent on-road grip, comfortable ride, and fuel efficiency. These tyres are suitable for drivers who use their 4WD mainly in urban areas or on highways, with minimal off-road use.
  • Limitations: They lack the deep tread necessary for off-road conditions, so performance on gravel, mud, or sand can be limited.

All-Terrain (A/T) Tyres

  • Best for: A balance between on-road and off-road driving.
  • Characteristics: A/T tyres have a more aggressive tread pattern than H/T tyres, designed to perform well on both paved roads and light to moderate off-road conditions like gravel, dirt, and mud. They offer better traction in varied terrains without sacrificing too much comfort for highway driving.
  • Advantages: Versatility, decent performance on both paved roads and off-road trails, and longer tread life than H/T tyres.
  • Limitations: A/T tyres are noisier and less fuel-efficient compared to H/T tyres. They also may not be as durable or capable in extreme off-road conditions as mud-terrain tyres.

Mud-Terrain (M/T) Tyres

  • Best for: Off-road driving in rugged and extreme conditions.
  • Characteristics: M/T tyres feature large, deep tread blocks and wide voids that allow them to perform excellently in mud, rocks, sand, and other challenging terrains. These tyres are built for maximum traction in tough conditions, making them ideal for serious off-road adventures.
  • Advantages: Superior off-road performance, excellent grip in mud, sand, and rocky conditions, and puncture resistance due to their reinforced sidewalls.
  • Limitations: M/T tyres can be noisy, less fuel-efficient, and provide a harsher ride on paved roads. They also tend to wear out faster if used primarily on highways, making them less practical for daily driving unless you frequently venture off-road.

How to decide?

Each type of tyre has its strengths, so the best option depends on how you use your 4WD, whether primarily for on-road driving, off-road exploration, or a combination of both.
