How to determine if a Tyre has a Rim Protector
The flange shield or rim protector is a rubber bead on the outside edge of the tyre to protect the wheel/rim from being damaged from hitting the kerb.
Different manufacturers use different codes, but most will use one of the following:
- FSL: Flange Shield
- FP: Fringe Protector
- MFS: Max Flange Shield
- RPB: Rim Protector Bar
- FR: Tyre Rib
Benefits of Rim Protectors
Rim or flange protectors are designed to shield the rim of your wheel from damage, and they come with both benefits and potential disadvantages. Here’s a look at both:
Benefits:
Protection from Damage: Rim protectors help prevent scratches, dents, and other damage to the wheel’s rim caused by curbs, potholes, or other road hazards. This can be particularly beneficial if you frequently drive in areas with poorly maintained roads.
Enhanced Aesthetics: They can help keep the rims looking new and unblemished, which can be especially important for those who are particular about their vehicle’s appearance.
Reduced Repair Costs: By preventing damage, rim protectors can potentially save on costly repairs or replacements of rims.
Increased Resale Value: Keeping rims in good condition can help maintain the vehicle's resale value. Prospective buyers often appreciate well-maintained vehicles with undamaged rims.
Improved Tyre Longevity: Protectors can also help prevent rim damage that could lead to tyre bead issues or leaks, potentially extending the lifespan of your tyres.
